Cargo Signal's Guide to IoT: What is IoT?

Cargo Signal harnesses the power of IoT technology to deliver real-time updates about the location, security, and quality of global freight to customers. IoT-powered sensors are what turns your cargo into "Smart Cargo." But what is IoT exactly?

IoT is an acronym for Internet of Things. Broadly, IoT refers to objects linked by a wired or wireless connection. More specifically, IoT refers to the connection of physical devices (“things”) embedded with software, sensors, and other technology allowing them to exchange information with other devices over the internet.

The data collected by these devices is typically delivered to a digital platform that allows the user to access and/or interact with that data. It’s likely that you use IoT devices in your everyday life. Here are just a few common examples of IoT in action:

  • Connecting to GPS mapping via smartphone to find the most expedient route
  • Tracking an expected package on your home computer
  • Monitoring footage collected by a home security camera on your tablet or phone

Any “smart” technologies are also powered by IoT. Smart devices can collect information and send it elsewhere, receive information and act upon it, or do both.

Below are some devices you may have seen before or that might already be a part of your everyday life:

  • Smart phones
  • Smart fitness trackers
  • Smart refrigerators
  • Smart lights
  • Smart security systems
  • Smart thermostats
  • Smart TVs
  • Smart watches
  • Smart locks
  • Smart cars

How Does Cargo Signal Use IoT?

Cargo Signal is applying IoT to the logistics industry, making “Smart Cargo” a reality.

Cargo Signal brings real-time visibility to supply chains struggling with disturbance, damages, and delays by placing IoT sensors on global shipments. Our sensors attach to your container, pallet, or box, then go on to transmit data about its location, quality, and security.

If the data points signal an issue, an alert will be generated letting you know action is needed. Or you can have our logistics professionals in the Command Center, who monitor your shipments 24/7, 365 days a year, intervene on your behalf to solve the issue.

An investment in IoT is an investment in supply chain resilience.

Are You Ready to Implement Sensor-based Logistics?

Ask yourself:

  • Am I leveraging IoT technology in my own everyday life but not in my supply chain?
  • Do I know more about the sandwich I just ordered through a food delivery app than I do about my precious cargo?
  • Am I unable to deliver real-time updates to my customers and stakeholders?

If yes, contact Cargo Signal today so we can help you streamline your supply chain.
